Southwest Colorado Wildflowers and Desert Plateau Photography Tour
Join me for a truly epic tour of Southwest Colorado and forrays into Southern Utah as we chase the summer monsoon light and wildflowers across the San Juan Mountains, Crested Butte area and locations in southern Utah. This 8 day, 7 night journey will take us to some of the Rocky Mountains most majestic high altitude wildflower basins, waterfalls, epic alpine landscapes and bizarre and breathtaking desert scenery. Each night we will camp in off road 4x4 locations where we will be steps from our shooting locations capturing dramatic mountain scenery. At night we sit under the stars and discuss all things photo related over a couple cold drinks. Each day will be a new adventure filled with exciting off road 4x4 tracks, hiking and shooting some of the finest scenery in the southwest U.S.

A 4x4, high clearance truck or jeep rental is required for this tour. If you drive, you must be able to negotiate rough 4x4 tracks through the mountains and desert. A 10% discount will be given to those who elect to rent a 4x4 and are willing to transport 2 clients along with them. Please let me know after registering if you are willing to drive. We will need a max of two drivers for this tour. I will be in my 4x4 truck loaded with supplies, water and coolers for food.
Our locations will put us in the high alpine basins above treelike where we will photograph some of the finest wildflower displays in the world along with waterfalls, mountain vistas, high alpine tarns and lakes and wildlife.
High Altitude Camps
Each night we will camp above 10,800 feet where we will literally be a short walk from some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the United States. During the downtime we will rest at our camp with spectacular views of mountains and wildlife.
In addition to our mountain camps, we will be only a short 2.5 hour drive from some of the most spectacular desert scenery in the world. if the conditions are right and monsoon is producing over the desert, we will visit some seriously off the beaten path canyon vistas where we will literally have the entire place to ourselves with deep canyon vistas in 180 degree views from camp.
Day 1: Friday July 28th - Today is an acclimation day for clients. We will spend some time at the hotel in Ridgeway covering photography techniques and going over the potential locations and challenges of the workshop from 1pm - 4pm. In the late afternoon we will spend time shooting various scenes below the Sneffels Range from Last Dollar Road and various overlooks.
Day 2: Saturday July 29th - In the morning we will have a sunrise shoot near owl Creek Pass. We will depart the hotel at checkout for our first overnight camp in the San Juan Mountains.
Day 3 - 7: We will be traveling to various locations in the San Juan Mountains, Crested Butte area and Colorado Plateau chasing the best light and landscapes.
Day 8: We end after sunrise and pack camp heading back down to Ridgeway for a departing lunch before the tour ends around noon.
Yankee Boy Basin, Gold King Basin, Telluride, Red Mountain, Clear Lake Basin, American Basin, Paradise Divide, Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass, Silverton, Moab, Canyonlands, etc.. Where and what we will visit will depend on the weather and conditions, but rest assured we will be camping in the most remote and beautiful locations overnight with amazing mountain and desert scenery.
What you will need:
Basic camera equipment including lenses ranging from 14mm to 200mm, sturdy tripod, at least 100 gigabytes of memory, tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, head lamp, clothing to cover temperatures from 38 degrees to 100 degrees, trekking poles, sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, a big time sense of adventure. Participants will also need a high clearance 4x4. Car pooling is recommended for this tour.
What we will supply:
Camp chairs, all cooking gear, plates, cups, silverware, guiding and instruction.
