Oregon Coast: A Coastal Journey Photography Workshop

Join Dustin for an journey down the Oregon Coast where rugged seastacks, big open sand beaches, rocky lava cliffs meet the grand Pacific Ocean.

The Oregon Coast stretches for over 360 miles. The scenic 101 Highway connects countless photogenic beaches and we will stop at the best of them: including Cannon Beach, Bandon Beach, Whaleshead Beach, Cape Kiwanda, and Seal Rocks. There will be many opportunities to photograph dramatic sea stacks, colorful moody skies, and of course Pacific Ocean wave action. This tour will be seascapes bonanza!

This Pacific Northwest region has a diverse range of coastal settings, ranging from pristine sand beaches, to rugged cliffs, and remote forests lining the sea. No single trip could cover all the fantastic conditions this region has to offer. However, the timing of the trip has been selected around the a dark sky period with ideal tides. As we travel farther south the destinations become more remote, and that gives us the opportunity to photograph the night sky (weather permitting). After we have had a chance to get familiar with the ocean rhythms we will put our skills to the test and visit the legendary Thor’s Well.

Since each location will have coastal and water elements, chest high waders or waterproof boots are recommended. A couple of relatively short and hikes will be involved so a basic fitness level is recommended. We will be traveling along the coast and switching accommodations a couple of times to relocate so our targeted photographic destination is nearby.

Weather is routinely unpredictable in these parts and this tour will consist of short lectures and post processing consultation during downtime, but we will mostly be focused on field work and chasing the light! Working hands-on is the most effective way for learn photographic techniques and to develop one’s artistic vision.

I’m excited to show you this wild and rugged world which has been shaped by the forces of nature for millennia.

Dustin began shooting nature landscapes over 15 years ago. Initially, learning on a fully manual 35mm film Nikon F1 camera shooting with black and white film as well as color slides. These days he has  transitioned to a digital camera system and fully embraced the digital workflow process. Dustin left a career in engineering to live a life spent outdoors and to answer the call of an explorer’s dream. The desire to experience the diversity, complexity, and majestic powers of nature fuels his passion for travel and photography.  Being born and raised on the Island of O’ahu, Hawai’i, Dustin developed an understanding based on ancient Hawaiian teachings that human beings have an intrinsic relationship with the land that should be held in high respect. He explores this connection to the world through his nature photography. Lately, Dustin has been drawn towards a more subtle form of nature’s abundant life force. The “this is it” experience is not necessarily located at a particular destination; it is found along the way. His images are created out of the moment where he feels in harmony with his surroundings.  Dustin produces images that are slightly fantastical yet still rooted in reality. He aims to create a sense of wonder in each photograph by recapturing the sense of awe and childhood imagination that often gets abandoned along the way to adulthood. He is driven to create an experience where the viewer is free to wallow in the mysteries and unknown. Through his work he hopes to rejuvenate your spirit, bring you peace, and inspire your imagination.
