Dates: June 27 - July 6, 2016
Iceland is an island country located just south of the Arctic Circle in the North Atlantic. Natural features include glaciers, volcanoes, mountains, sheer rock cliffs, pristine black sand beaches, roaring waterfalls, and much more. Wildlife opportunities include whales, seals, reindeer, fox, shorebirds, various waterfowl, raptors, and the ever-present iconic Icelandic ponies.
At this time of the year in Iceland, the golden light can last for up to 6 hours each night creating magical conditions for dramatic landscape and nature photography.
FOCUS ON MAKING GREAT IMAGES
Our goal is to make sure participants get the best photographs possible. We keep the group out shooting as much as possible during the best light. We stay flexible to ensure we match the light with the subject we are photographing.
Day 1 & 2: After picking you up at the airport, we will depart for a 2.5 hour drive to the Snaefells Peninsula where will photograph waterfalls, rugged coastlines and the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain and Triple Falls. 2 Overnights on the Snaefells Peninsula.
Day 3: In the late morning we depart for Geysir and Gullfoss with a photo stop on the way to photograph Hraunfossar (Borgarfjörður, western Iceland), a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. We will shoot the geysir basin, Gullfoss and a secret glacial waterfall that only a few photographers know about.
Day 4: After photographing in the Gulfoss area for a few hours, we depart for the Highlands where we will be staying at a remote guesthouse. In the afternoon and into sunset we travel and photograph the Highlands of Landmannalaugar, a place in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the highland of Iceland. It is at the edge of Laugahraun lava field that was formed in an eruption around the year 1477. It is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and surrounding landscape.
Day 5: Today we depart for Vik with an exciting drive across the highlands where we will be fording many glacial streams and photographing unique highlands landscapes and reflections in the many lakes, ponds and rivers along the way. In the evening after checking into the hotel, we will shoot along the coast of Vik.
The following day we shoot the surrounding landscape of Vik, Puffins, sea birds, iconic churches, Icelandic Ponies and much more. Not to mention (hopefully), colorful fields of Lupines and flowers.
Day 6-7: Today we depart for the Glacial Lagoon, Jökulsárlón. The Jökulsárlón lake provides outstanding views of the ice cap, a vast dome of ice that rises to a height of 3,000 feet (910 m). It spills to the lagoon 12 miles (19 km) away from the jagged glacier hill to the edge of the water line. The lake developed only about 60 years ago (1948 is mentioned), when the entire area was less than 100 feet (30 m) of glacier, which was only 250 yards (230 m) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 2 miles (3.2 km) away from Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull was at the shore line of the ocean and dropped icebergs into the ocean. We will also be photographing the Black Sand Beaches near the lagoon where large chunks of ice and bergs wash up in the shore surrounding by pounding Ocean waves. We will also be shooting the Vesturhorn just outside of Höfn as well a waterfalls, abandoned farms and ponies.
Day 8: Today we drive back to the west stopping for the night in Skogar where we will be able to photograph two amazing waterfalls, Skogafoss and Seljalanfoss as well as lush cliffside waterfalls, farms and countryside scenics. Overnight in Skogar.
Day 9: We depart for the Reykjanes Peninsula, outside of the Reykjavik, where we will photograph geothermal volcanic landscapes, moss covered lava fields, a rugged coastline and the Blue Lagoon.
Day 10: Tour ends, departures to Keflavik airport for return flights.
